Crossrail Place, Canary Wharf

Specifying security with certainty

Crossrail Place is an architectural and infrastructure landmark. Located at the northern dock of London’s West India Quay, it forms part of the Elizabeth line. It also brings together public space, retail, and critical transport infrastructure beneath a 300-metre timber lattice roof.

Designed by Foster + Partners and constructed by Canary Wharf Contractors, the £500 million development is more than a transport hub. It’s a structure of precision, performance, and design.

Allgood was appointed in early 2015 to deliver the architectural ironmongery package. The brief was clear: high-performance products without compromise on longevity or security.

From the outset, our role was about more than supply. We worked closely with contractors to ensure the integrity of both aesthetic and functional aspects of the ironmongery. This was particularly important for the doors separating the public areas from secure spaces.

A unified approach to durability and security

Security was a key requirement.  The architect, specified our solenoid Redlocks®. Designed, manufactured, and tested in-house, the Redlock range combines mechanical strength with electronic controls. As a result, it offers the reliability essential for high-traffic, high-security buildings like Crossrail Place.

For the tactile items, Allgood’s Modric® range was selected for the steel doors, backed by a 25 year warrantee on all products. This guaranteed durability while also providing a uniform appearance across all doors.

Engineered for continuous, reliable operation

The Allgood Redlocks 9944P5 and 9964P were chosen for their continuous operation in demanding environments. These locks feature a robust three-part stainless steel latch bolt with anti-friction and anti-thrust design, ensuring secure latching under pressure. At the core of each lock is a continuously rated solenoid, designed to remain powered permanently without overheating or degrading. As a result, the locks allow for 24/7 operation with automatic unlocking during a power failure (fail-safe).

Beyond mechanical strength, these Redlocks integrate with wider building management systems. Latch monitoring and cylinder position feedback via internal microswitches enable real-time status reporting to access control and alarm systems. Certified to ANSI 115.1 standards and UL listed, both locks suit standard ANSI door preparations. The 9944P5 also provides dual-handle control and the possibility to reverse the lock’s handing easily on-site.

Security and compliance

The inclusion of the Redlock range supported the project’s wider objectives for secure, compliant, and intelligent infrastructure. The 9964P is independently tested to BS EN 12209 and fire-rated to BS EN 1634-1 for 120 minutes. Additionally, hardened steel pins in the deadbolt provide resistance to forced entry. Compatibility with approved 19mm electric release strikes and optional integrated microswitches ensured compliance with access and fire safety requirements.

Every Redlock supplied for Crossrail Place came with a 10-year mechanical guarantee and a one-year electrical warranty. In an environment where reliability is critical, these locks still operate flawlessly years after installation. They continue to facilitate the secure flow of one of London’s busiest transport hubs.

At Allgood, we don’t just meet standards, we engineer certainty – fit for today, proven for tomorrow.
